We will be featuring Carte Goodwin, former US Senator as our featured speaker. Carte P. Goodwin is an attorney currently working with the Charleston law firm of Goodwin & Goodwin, LLP. In July of 2010, Mr. Goodwin was appointed to fill the vacancy in the Senate caused by the passing of Senator Robert C. Byrd, serving until a special election was held. During this time, Mr. Goodwin was recognized by TIME magazine as one of the “40 under 40 rising stars on the political landscape” and “a new generation of civic leaders… at work trying to fix a broken system — and restore faith in the process”. As the first U.S. Senator born after 1970, Carte has a unique perspective of the keys to West Virginia’s success.
From 2005 to 2009, Goodwin served four years as General Counsel to Governor Manchin. In addition, Goodwin chaired the West Virginia School Building Authority and served as a member of the State Consolidated Public Retirement Board. Following his return to private practice in 2009, Goodwin was appointed to chair the Independent Commission on Judicial Reform, along with former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, which was tasked with evaluating the need for broad systemic reform to West Virginia’s judicial system.
A native of Mt. Alto, West Virginia, Goodwin received a B.A. in Philosophy from Marietta College in 1996 and received his Doctor of Law from the Emory University School of Law, graduating Order of the Coif in 1999. Mr. Goodwin currently resides in Charleston, West Virginia with his wife, Rochelle, son, Wesley Patrick, and daughter, Anna Vail.

We will be honoring John D. Curry as our Business Leader of the Year. Superintendent John D. Curry is a man of quality and character who serves as a true instructional leader as evidenced by the strides made under his leadership in Greenbrier County Schools. Through his leadership, Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) are in place throughout the county’s schools and are incorporated as part of the regular agenda for all county administrators during monthly administrative meetings. 
Superintendent Curry’s leadership has made him a role model for administrators, teachers and students.  Under his leadership, the county now has universal Pre-K with 19 Special Needs integrated classrooms in the school system and two community collaborative classrooms, as well as a middle school system, which required the restructuring of all area schools.
Due to his persistence a 37.7 million dollar school bond was passed by county residents, generating an additional 10.6 million in WVSBA support as a result.  This provided for major renovations to Smoot Elementary and an auxiliary gym at Eastern Greenbrier Middle School.  Currently, major renovations are being completed at Greenbrier West High School and new constructions are under way for new Rainelle and Lewisburg Elementary Schools.
Superintendent Curry serves on a number of local, regional and statewide education committees and is active in his community through membership in several community organizations. He has said his greatest sense of pride—other than his wife and three daughters—comes from working with a team of dedicated educators, staff, parents and community for the benefit of all students.
